Bruce Munro Powering the

Star-Turn at the Holburne Museum, Bath

Two years ago I was riding my bicycle in the lanes near my workshop - it's a very good way to keep fit. But that winter afternoon it was dark and my lights had failed, and I fell off into a ditch full of icy cold cow-poop.

As I got to my feet, the idea of cycling in a warm, dry, well-lit environment seemed irresistebly attractive. Almost immediately when I got home I started sketching the Star-Turn bike.

The design is also an exploration of our cultural obsession with celebrity. This is a tongue-in-cheek bicycle for celebrities, where we can all take our turn to cycle for 3 minutes of fame. It's supposed to be the ultimate exercise machine, which keeps both muscles and ego in prime condition!

But a chance meeting on a train led to the most important inspiration for Star-Turn. I struck up a conversation with a volunteer from the Help For Heroes charity, and by the end of the journey was determined to do my bit to raise funds for this wonderful cause.
